Surviving a New JobThis is a guest post by Claudia on surviving the first month in a new job You can read the guidelines to guest posting at our write for us page.

There is a huge sense of relief when you are offered a new job after going through the rigors of having to post resume, attend interviews and the endless tension before the desired result. When you join the new position then the tension will come back but in a different way this time.

Here, you will have to face new coworkers, new boss, new style of functioning and learning the ropes of the new job itself. All the new learning can really have a stressful effect upon you, particularly in the first month which is the toughest.

Adapting to a new job can take some time but do not despair, as you will improve by learning the new rules during the first month which is crucial.

Be consistent and stay pleasant

On your first day at work, you would naturally come in with a cheerful disposition and a ready smile. Now, keep that consistency throughout the first month of your job, no matter how stressful or tiresome it may be. People’s first impression about is the lasting impression, so project your positive personality, as this will go a long way in proving how well you can do your job.

However, do not be too overbearing in your attitude of confidence, as this may not be too favorable towards your new co-workers.

Be social and mingle

Just because you are nervous should not stop you from joining in the others during the lunch hours. This way, you can always get to meet the rest of your co-workers and get to know them. This is a sure way of not only making you more comfortable with them, but can be an opening for you to get vital information as people are more relaxed in a casual setting.

Do not be afraid to ask questions or suggestions as this is one way of breaking stiff office barriers. People will be happy to help you in whatever way if they see you as someone willing to learn and adapt.

Show your dedication

No matter how stressful the job and even if you sometimes get a ticking off from the boss, do not lose heart or complain about it. Keep up the positive attitude by showing that you are willing to learn and improve, arriving to office punctually and sitting through the end of the day.

Sometimes it happens that you are left with nothing much to do, at least during the first few days even as your boss sorts out your assignments, do not appear bored or restless. Instead, browse through the office library on manuals that may help you to understand the workings of the system better. If not, read newspaper or other magazines available in the office.

Be accommodating but do not be a doormat

When you are new to work, you would naturally want to please people around you. In this case, people may ask you for small favors, such as running an errand for them and getting those photocopies printed out. While it pays to be nice and accommodating, you must also let it be conveyed subtly that your kindness in being helpful, should not be mistaken for weakness.

Once you are able to get pass through the first month of your job, you will gain more confidence and become familiar with the office routine. However, keep up your cheerful demeanor, positive attitude and keep learning to improve, even when you are more settled in your new job.
